1.2.1. Scope

This SQEMS will cover the scope of activities and improvement to the Safe and environmentally sound management of Company vessels and personnel employed ashore and onboard. The SQEMS also provides Quality Management practices upon these areas of concern.

1.2.2. Application

The SQEMS has been largely derived from the sound management system principles reflected in the requirements of the “International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention” (also known as the “International Safety Management Code”, or more commonly as the “ISM Code”), “Quality management systems – Requirements” (ISO 9001:2015), “Environmental management systems – Requirements with guidance for use” (ISO 14001:2015).

This manual shall describe the essential objectives and policies of the company to include the requirements for following:

1.2.3. Context of the Organization

(a) As part of its strategic planning, Company determines, understands and considers its external and internal contextual issues. Company shall monitor and review said issues and determine its risks and opportunities as a basis for planning SQEMS and achieving improvement. Such issues shall include environmental conditions being affected by or capable of affecting the organization.

(i) External context consists of the institutions, situations, events and other factors outside the organization’s boundaries that interact with and impact the organization’s direction, decisions and activities and determine its opportunities and threats. External context factors could include:

(ii) Internal context consists of various factors that influence its direction, decisions and activities relating to its operations, products, services and use of resources and accordingly help determine its strengths and weaknesses. The internal context factors may include:

(b) Company organization

Company organization consists of Top Management, Senior Management, staffs, departments, committees, functions and levels relating to Safety, Quality and Environmental System.

(c) Shipboard organization

Shipboard organization consists of seafarers, committees, departments and functions relating to the SQEMS e.g.; the Captain, Chief Engineer, Chief Officer, Shipboard Safety Health & Environmental Committee, Deck, Engine and Catering departments.

(d) Ship

The SQEMS is applicable to all ship types under management of the company.
